A biodegradable functional fluid of low flammability consists of or contains at least one brominated alkylbenzene derivative of the general formula I IMAGE in which R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R3 is a hydrogen atom or a group of the general formula IMAGE in which n is an integer having a value from 1 to 4, m is an integer having a value of 1 or 2, y is an integer having a value of 0, 1 or 2 and x is an integer having a value from 1 to 3, with the proviso that the sum x + y has a value from 1 to 3.
