In a first method step, the spatial distribution of the amplitude and phase of the natural thermal radiation of the object under examination (1) is determined using a microwave receiving device (31). In a second method step, the spatial temperature distribution in the examination object (1) is derived from the spatial distribution of the amplitudes and phases of the natural radiation. In order to increase the accuracy of the temperature distribution measurement, it is provided according to the invention that the spatial distribution of the complex dielectric constant on the examination object (1) is measured before the second method step, and that in the second method step the spatial distribution of the complex dielectric constant is taken into account when deriving the temperature distribution. The device for carrying out the method comprises a first microwave receiving device (5) with evaluation circuit (25, 27) for determining the ε distribution and a second microwave receiving device (31) for detecting the natural thermal radiation. Both devices (5, 31) are connected to a computing device (29) which calculates the spatial temperature distribution in the examination object (1).
