A treatment plant for the biological purification of organically polluted waste water has a preliminary settling tank (1) and a tank (2) furnished with a buoyant fixed bed reactor, in which tank an aerobic purification takes place. Downstream of the tank (2) is a tank (3) in which the aerobic purification of the waste water takes place. The direction of flow through the tank (3) is from top to bottom, and the fixed bed reactor (9) disposed in the tank (3) is made of a material which is lighter than water. IMAGE
