In a method for setting the backlast of hypoid gear set of a final drive unit to a predetermined tolerance range, the contact surfaces for the bearings of the crown wheel in relation to the input pinion axle are first of all measured at the gear case and the contact surfaces of the bearings of the crown wheel in relation to the input pinion axle are measured at the bevel gear set to be installed in the gear case, the input pinion and the crown wheel meshing with or without predetermined backlash during the measurement of the bevel gear set. In accordance with the measured values obtained between the contact surfaces of the gear case and the contact surfaces of the bearings of the crown wheel, shims are then fitted, the said shims having a thickness such that the axial position of the crown wheel relative to the input pinion is fixed in accordance with the backlash to be set. The backlash is then determined. In order to reduce the likelihood of reassembly being needed due to the many other tolerances, use is made of a bush, which is fixed on the gear case and in which the input pinion is eccentrically mounted, the eccentricity of the input pinion axle being in the direction of the axle of the crown wheel in the bush and being dimensioned such that, when the bush is rotated through 180 DEG about the input pinion axle, a shift in the backlash by the value of the predetermined tolerance range occurs.
