To operate a short-wave transmitter according to the frequency hopping method, an antenna matching device is tuned via a control device to a selected frequency of the entire frequency band (1.5 to 30 MHz) in such a way that it does not exceed a predefined mismatch (VSWR = 3) within a frequency sub-range (2 MHz) of this entire frequency range; the control power values for the power transmitter with which the power transmitter can still be operated without damage despite the mismatching are then determined by means of a known control circuit, which operates between the power transmitter and the control transmitter, by feeding in selected calibration frequencies within this frequency sub-range (2 MHz) and are stored in the control device; the corresponding permissible control power values are calculated from these calibration values in the control device through interpolation for all the possible transmission frequencies in the frequency sub-range (2 MHz) and are likewise stored and only the control power fed to the power transmitter is set during the subsequent frequency hopping transmission operation to the value stored for the respective set frequency.
