The invention relates to a method of feeding fine-grained lignite 2 from a lock-hopper vessel 7 into a reaction vessel 1 for converting the lignite under high pressure. The lignite 2 predried to less than 12% by weight residual moisture is first of all poured into the lock-hopper vessel 7 at zero pressure and, after the vessel 7 is covered, is heated by an auxiliary gas 18 until temperatures of between 250 and 350 DEG C are achieved in the fill 8 before the lignite 2 is fed into the conversion reactor 1. The heating of the lignite is effected by heating devices 11 and 12 outside and inside the lock-hopper vessel 7. The heat for heating the lignite is uncoupled from the conversion process. The lock-hopper vessel is pressurised to a pressure which is slightly higher than the conversion pressure of the lignite in the reactor 1. The lignite 2, which is made free-flowing by the heating, is fed from the lock-hopper vessel 7 via a metering device 9 and drop pipes 10 directly into a fluidised bed 3 or a solid bed. IMAGE
