The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for detecting limit wear and/or cutting-edge breakage in tools with an insulated strip conductor applied to the cutting tip at a certain distance from its cutting edge. This conductor strip and the workpiece are connected to a voltage source and form parts of an open electric circuit. A signal serving to change or stop the machining operation is produced when a conductive connection comes about between strip conductor and workpiece after abrasion through wear or after destruction of the insulating protective coating.
