In a process for preventing the oxidation of a Pb alloy, Sn alloy and/or Sn-Pb alloy in the molten state, suitable amounts of gallium and phosphorus are added simultaneously, or in the sequence gallium, phosphorus, to a melt based on an alloy of Pb, Sn or Sn-Pb, in the temperature range from 250 to 520 DEG C, in order to reduce the oxidative consumption of materials, and are mixed with the melt in order to form a mirror surface on the surface of the melt.
