It is known to add reducing agents to the simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx from the flue gases of boilers fired with fossil fuels in order to convert the iron(III) forming in the iron chelate process back into iron(II). It is known to add the reducing agent in the form of a powder or as a paste in glycol. The addition in powder form has the disadvantage that it is difficult to transport, whereas the addition as paste has a disadvantageous effect on the water treatment process. In order to eliminate these disadvantages, it is proposed according to the invention that the reducing agent be incorporated in an oily composition and be made pumpable and, after the consumption of the reducing agent, be sucked off at the surface of the scrubbing liquid and the oil have a specific gravity which is smaller than that of the scrubbing water.
