Power supply units which convert the AC voltage supplied from a power supply unit without a transformer into DC voltage, compensation being used which brings the efficiency = cos sigma , into predetermined limits. These power supply units allow electronic ballasts for low-pressure discharge lamps of any power to be operated, the power supply unit being arranged integrated in the ballast or externally. Emergency lighting systems or complete lighting systems can thus be operated with direct current via a power supply unit and electronic ballast, a changeover being made to a battery in the event of power failure. The power supply units are designed for all mains ranges from 100 volts to 240 volts.
