Building components which can be worked like those of pressed wood particles (wood chips) or asbestos cement are produced by compounding marl with paper, in particular in a ratio of amounts from 0.75 to 10 and containing less than 50 % by weight of water, partially freed of the water by pressing in the desired shape and optionally dried at temperatures of 30 to 50 DEG C. In addition to marl and cellulose fibres, the building components can contain cement, plaster, sawdust, wood shavings and alkali metal silicate and/or have a coating of alkali metal silicate or paraffin. A dry pulverulent mixture of the constituents is compounded with the addition of water to putty or knifing filler and optionally made into a paintable product by further dilution.
