The process for reducing emissions, in particular emissions of hydrocarbon compounds, during the casting of metals, including the equipment for carrying out the process, wherein the metal can be poured as molten cast iron into casting moulds of sand with a binder such as plasticised plastic, is characterised in that the molten cast iron has a high degree of purity and state of nucleation as well as a tendency to subcooling and a corresponding chemical composition (liquidus temperature), and this melt can be poured at a casting temperature, which is 50-100 DEG C lower, into casting moulds under a protective gas atmosphere, and the casting step proceeds in a serial sequence of mass production.
