In a process for the removal of fuel vapours and similar hydrocarbon vapours from internal combustion systems, in particular in vehicles, by adsorption to an adsorbent and for the regeneration of the adsorbent in the operating phases of the internal combustion engine by means of an air stream drawn in by suction by the internal combustion engine via a controllable valve, passed over the adsorbent and used as a portion of the total combustion air drawn in by suction by the internal combustion engine, under all load conditions of the internal combustion engine, the maximum possible regeneration throughput of the adsorbent layer, even without the combustion mixture being made over-rich or lean, being ensured by the controllable valve used being an apparatus in which the proportionality factor can be modified by electrical action and which generates, by its fundamental characteristic curve, proportional courses of the intake volumetric flow rate passed over the adsorbent and the entire intake volumetric flow rate of the internal combustion engine. An apparatus for carrying out this process comprises an adsorbent layer through which the vapours to be adsorbed and, in alternation therewith, the regeneration air can flow, a valve controlling the volumetric flow rate of the regeneration air and an intake air by-pass pipe of the internal combustion engine for sucking in the laden regeneration air, the controllable valve being [lacuna] from a [lacuna] by means of the intake pressure ...
