Specimens are introduced into a gas chromatograph via the evaporator as follows. The specimen carrier (2) is connected to the evaporator (1) only for sufficient time for transfer of the specimen to the evaporator. The vapour obtained by evapn. of the specimen in the evaporator flows through a throttle (15) of constant cross-section into the chromatograph column. When this flow has ceased, the evaporator (1) is connected to atmos. The volume of the specimen carrier is rather smaller than that of the evaporator and the pressure generated by evapn. expels the vapours from the evaporator into the carrier gas stream flowing into the column. The vapours are transferred from the evaporator into the column by the carrier gas stream, which is fed into the evaporator. After the vapours have been transferred into the column, the feed of carrier gas is interrupted and shifted to the inlet to the column behind the outlet from the throttle.
