Spirit level which can be used both horizontally and vertically. It comprises a base 1 forming a reference surface 2 and, hinged on to the base 1, so as to be able to take two positions, one attached to the said base 1, and the other perpendicular, a casing 6 supporting a transparent enclosure on at least one of its faces and partially filled with a liquid so as to form an air bubble 17, the said enclosure being in the form of a circular lens with convex faces and comprising, on its visible face 14, a reference circle 18 corresponding substantially to the diameter of the bubble 17.
