A passive decay heat removal system in which gas pressurization of a gap between the double walls of heat exchanger tubes 32 initiates heat removal by triggering an increase in tube heat conductivity. Coolant circulates by natural convection between a cooler 16 in the reactor and heat exchanger 30 which is cooled also by natural convection. When a sensor 14 senses that operation of the system is required, valve 22 is opened to pressurise the heat exchanger tube wall gap which was previously evacuated. IMAGE
