In a process for the production of a hardened mass of cement, a hydrating mass of cement is prepared and placed and is then permitted to cure under moist-curing conditions to an acceptable degree of hydration. The non-hydrated water content of the hydrated mass of cement is then reduced to an optimum non-zero level i.e. so that substantially no water remains in the physically bound states which cause the bulk material to expand on freezing between 0 DEG C and -70 DEG C and a water-impermeable coating is applied to the cement mass.
