PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material of organic semiconductor, etc., in high yield and purity, by subjecting 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'- bipyridine to hydroxyethylation, separating the hydroxyethylated compound by a liquid chromatographyl and dehydrating above-mentioned compound. CONSTITUTION:4,4'-Dimethyl-2,2'-bipyidine is reacted with a strongly basic compound such as lithium isopropylamide, etc., in an inert organic solvent such as tetrahydrofuran, etc., to form carbanion and a formamide gas is blow into the reaction system to subject the bipyridine derivative to hydroxyethylation and the resultant 4'-(beta-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine intermediate is isolated and purified in good purity from the reaction mixture to separate the above-mentioned intermediate, then the separated intermediate is dissolved in a solvent such as xylene, etc. and heated under reflux in the presence of a dehydrating agent such as P2O5, etc., to dehydrate and provide the aimed compound used as a raw material such as a functional material, etc.
