PURPOSE:To provide an image with a high contrast, by controlling an acoustic impedance of an amorphous film with a magnet to match the acoustic impedance between water and a sample to be observed. CONSTITUTION:Water 1 is placed in a casing 5 and between a matching film 3 and a sample 10 to be observed. The matching film 3 is made of an amorphous material to prevent surface reflection of ultrasonic waves. The focal length of a piezo-electric vibrator 8 is adjusted with a vibrator vertical driver 7 to propagate the ultrasonic wave through the sample 10 being observed from the piezo-electric vibrator 8. Here, the acoustic impedance of the amorphous matching film 3 is adjusted for that of the sample 10 being observed with an electromagnet 4. It is so arranged that no reflection of ultrasonic waves occurs on the surface of the sample 10 being observed, which allows the ultrasonic waves to pass through the water 1 to propagate a large amount of ultrasonic energy through the sample 10 being observed. This controls the matching film to match the acoustic impedance between the water and the sample being observed thereby achieving a higher contrast of an image.
