PURPOSE:To efficiently nitride an austenitic or austenitic-ferric two-phase stainless steel wire by coating the surface of the steel wire with a low temp. oxidation inhibitor before nitriding so as to inhibit surface oxidation. CONSTITUTION:The surface of an austenitic or austenitic-ferritic two-phase stainless steel wire is coated with a low temp. oxidation inhibitor such as stearate. The coated steel wire is heat treated at a temp. at which a nitriding reaction takes place or above in an atmosphere cong. nitrogen.
