PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an optical functional material, semiconductor material and catalyst material, by heating a mixture of Sc, Al and Zn or their oxides in a specific atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:(A) Metallic scandium, scandium oxide or a compound decomposable into scandium oxide by heating is mixed with (B) metallic aluminum, aluminum oxide or a compound decomposable into aluminum oxide by heating and (C)metallic zinc, zinc oxide or a compound decomposable into zinc oxide by heating at atomic ratios (Sc:Al:Zn) of 1:1:3. The objective compound is produced by heating the mixture at =600 deg.C in air, in an oxidizing atmosphere or in a reducing atmosphere in which Sc and Al are not reduced over 3-valent state and 2-valent state, respectively.
