PURPOSE:To remove sulfur compds. from a product gas with high reliability and efficiency at a low cost, by directly feeding a desulfurizing agent into a fluidized bed coal gasifier so as to directly contact the agent with a product gas, thereby desulfurizing in two steps. CONSTITUTION:Coal 2 and air 3 are introduced into a fluidized bed coal gasifier 1, thereby gasifying the coal. The product gas 5 is introduced into an upper cooling zone and cooled to a temp. of =800 deg.C. Then, at least one desulfurizing agent 4 selected from Fe2O3 and CaO each having a particle size of 10-40mum is fed, thereby conducting a reaction. The reaction mixture is fed into a dust collector 6, where FeS 11, char 10 and unreacted Fe2O3 are removed so as to accomplish desulfurization to a degree of 50-80%. The product gas 19 contg. unreacted H2S is then introduced through a cooling device 15 into a second desulfurizer 16, in which the gas is contacted with at least one desulfurizing agent selected from Ti-, Ni-, Co- and Mo-base catalysts, thereby conducting desulfurization.
