PURPOSE:To enable simultaneous measurement of optical rotary dispersion and circular dichroism with a simple construction, by introducing Mullers matrix method and processing electrically optical measurement with a single optical system. CONSTITUTION:Linear polarization is effected on a monochromatic light-flux. The polarized condition of the light beam after passing through a polarizer 3 is changed alternately to clockwise circular polarized light and counterclockwise circular polarized light with the specified modulated frequency by an optical polarization modulator 15. And, the beam of light that passed a specimen chamber 20 set in a light path passes a light-detector 6 to be irradiated to a light-detector 7 and its intensity is detected. Here, each element is so arranged that axis of the modulator 15 and that of the light-detector 6 are given with a difference of 45 deg. relative to the optical axis of the polarizer 3. An output signal of the light-detector 7 is processed by a signal processing unit consisting of amplifiers 8, 9, 11, DC amplifier 25 synchronous rectifiers 23, 24, calculating recorder 26, etc. and basing upon a frequency component corresponding to a modulated frequency in the modulator 15 and doubled frequency component of the modulated frequency, circular dichroism and optical rotary dispersivity of the specimen can be obtained by application of a determining formula based on the Muller matrix method.
