A method for use in guiding an untrimmed board or the like into a trimming apparatus. According to the method, the useful width of the board 1 is determined with the use of a pair of interactive jaws 17, which are brought into engagement with the board in order to grip this between them. Those parts of the jaws 17 which interact with the board are constituted by elastic material bodies, the gripping force being adjusted in such a way in relation to the elasticity of the material that any wane in the board 1 is pressed into the elastic material. The distance between the jaws 17 is used as a measure of the useful width of the board 1 as it is guided into the trimming apparatus 2.
