The paper is drawn from a roller and fed through four print stages, each of which has ink take-up, transfer, format and pressure rollers. Each take-up roller 'licks' the surface of a pool of ink in a tray. After the ink has been applied, the strip of paper passes through a drying chamber. As it emerges from the chamber, colour intensity detectors examine colour tracks on the margin of the paper. If the intensity of any colour increases, a comparator unit opens a valve allowing solvent to be mixed with the ink in the appropriate reservoir. The diluted ink is then pumped to the tray. The same principle may be used in a monochrome printing machine.
