During printing on multi-colour sheet-offset presses, the rate of ink tack-build or ink setting behaviour of the pigmented latex coatings can influence the cleanliness of running the press with respect to ink-coating build-up on the blankets in the later stations as well as the degree of tail-edge pick on the print signatures. In our earlier work, latex technology was developed to decrease the rate of ink tack-build and improve these press runnability and print quality aspects. More recently, our latex development has focussed on adjusting the rate of ink tack-build, so that the commercial sheet-fed turn-around time for printing the sheets on the second side can be shorter. The work in this paper suggests that the interaction of the different ink vehicle components with latex polymers can influence the rate of ink tack-build for commercial sheet-fed press runnability and print quality.
