The valve assembly has a seat with a housing (3) having a central passage (2) contg. a valve member (4). The valve member is movable to a partly closed position from a middle released position by increased fluid flow. The valve member also has a tapered venturi like passage (5) in the same direction as the central passage. Between the member and the seat (1) is a return spring (6). The valve member also contains parallel flow channels spaced at regular intervals around the central passage. When the member is in the position which closes the central passage, these peripherally channels are partly closed by the valve seat.
