The egg-laying nest has a plastics grass mat (11) covered floor 810) which runs back to an egg-collector e.g. a conveyor belt (3). An egg expelling rail swings across the floor expelling the foul through an access opening (14). The rail is pivotally attached to a horizontal shaft. The rail (15) is coupled to an actuator by a spring (25) and has two positions. In the first position the rail is biassed to an out of use position and in the second position, the rail is biased to swing across the floor with sufficient force to remove any foul present. The shaft (21) on which the rail is attached supports at least one projection 824) with an intermediate spring. The shaft on which the rail is attached, is secured by the actuator rotatably and held between the end positions by friction. In both actuator positions, the projections cause the spring to bias the rail into an operative position.4 USE/ADVANTAGE : Esp. for chickens and can be totally automatic using hydraulic pneumatic or electrical control.
