In order to obtain a greater maximum braking force in a thyristor-controlled locomotive with a recuperator brake, a current is connected into the series field winding (6) during the triggering process when there are one or more travel motors (4) with a series field winding (6) and an external field winding (7), which current compensates the external field of the external field winding (7). An advantageous de-excitation circuit is constructed in such a way that a damping resistor (10) and a diode (11) are connected in series in the circuit of the series field winding (6), the other end of the series field winding (6) being connected via a thyristor (12). In the case of locomotives with more than one motor unit (a to d) the said units are connected in parallel. IMAGE
