The invention relates to a process for removing scale and oxides from the surface of metals and metal alloys by means of a pickling bath. According to the invention, the pickling bath is an aqueous solution of iron chloride-sulphate and/or iron (III) chloride and/or iron (III) sulphate, which may contain up to 5% of a mineral acid. The Fe+++ concentration of the pickling solution is 15-200 g/l. The pickling is carried out for 3-40 minutes at 20-80@C. The spent pickling solution can be regenerated with chlorine and used repeatedly. The process avoids working with highly concentrated acids and does not leave any spent pickling baths which pollute the environment. Pickling additives are not required.
