A substrate mixture based on hemp stalks is prepd. by immersion in water, is applied to supports in the form of upstanding walls, and is first placed in an incubation and then in a growing environment. The substrate is pref. a mixture of crushed hemp stalks, cleaned and with all dirt and dust removed, having a density of 0.15 and 0.45 when dry and wet respectively. The appts. pref.has a base with uprights connected by spacers, and walls formed by netting panels, slidable in tracks and removably located between the uprights to form a housing for the substrate. There is pref. a stretched wire or blade cutter controlled automatically or semi-automatically and movable in tracks fixed on the uprights.
