ABSTRACTA method for collecting oil from a pluralityof spaced-apart oil-bearing subterranean formationsincludes the steps of drilling a shaft from the earth'ssurface to a depth sufficient to intersect a pluralityof spaced-apart oil-bearing formations, excavating aworking area at selected oil-bearing subterranean for-mations and thereafter drilling a plurality of generallyhorizontal boreholes from each of the working areasinto the selected oil-bearing subterranean formations.Thereafter, oil collection troughs are excavated withineach of the working areas to collect oil from the bore-holes and conduct the collected oil into a sump fromwhich the oil is raised to the earth's surface utilizinga single lift.
