DIRECT CHILL METAL CASTING APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUEABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREIn the direct chill casting of a metal, a mass of themolten metal is introduced into the top of an open bottomed moldcavity having a support telescoped therein, the molten metal massis chilled, and the mold and support are reciprocated in relationto one another axially of the cavity to form the chilled mass intoan elongated body of the metal. According to the invention, astream of pressurized gas is delivered to a point outside of thecavity, the gas is discharged into the cavity at a point on theperiphery thereof, and means are interposed between the point ofdelivery and the point of dishcarge, externally of the cavity, toconvert the stream of gas into an annulus of fluid that extendsabout the metallic mass at the periphery of the cavity.-1-
