ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREAn apparatus and method for calculating the totalinstantaneous frictional torque in an operating internal combus-tion engine. The apparatus includes a central processing unitwhich receives inputs from a first sensor which measures theangular velocity of the engine and a second sensor which measuresthe gas pressure within a cylinder of the engine. The centralprocessing unit executes a stored program which operates on theoutputs from the first and second sensors, the known instanta-neous inertia torques of the rotating and reciprocating masses ofthe engine and the instantaneous torque of the load on the engineand generates an output to an indicator to provide an indicationof the total instantaneous frictional torque in the engine.
