The process and the corresponding equipment are intended to allow separate control of individual catalyst beds. For this purpose, at least a part quantity of the circulating gas leaving the penultimate catalyst bed is, for control, passed to a steam generator as heat exchanger and/or a by-pass line around this heat exchanger, and a part quantity of cold circulating gas, before heating and feeding to the first catalyst bed, can be fed as quench to the said by-pass line, the equipment being designed as a steam-generating tube-and-shell heat exchanger (8) and having a by-pass pipe (18) passing through the tube bundle (17), mixing with the hot process gas flowing through the by-pass pipe (18) being provided in the region of the header for the cooled process gas.
