A special graphic image, which includes the symbolic representation of the edges, outlines and also the surfaces of the pattern to be analysed and the spaces in between. The three types of representation required here are closely linked. This allows simultaneous analysis of the pattern with several types of representation or a change in the type of representation during the analysis. This allows the advantages of each type of representation to be exploited. The graphic image is divided into application-dependent or application-independent representational or descriptive levels. The hierarchical organisation of the graphic image reproduces the image content with different degrees of precision. At one of the descriptive levels, descriptors (D), each with locally adjacent descriptors (D) of the same edge (B) or other edges (B) are interconnected over a coarse area (F). IMAGE
