The process makes use of biological nitrification in which ammonium is oxidised to nitrate in a reactor system (3, 9) with the aid of a biocatalyst (4, 12, 19) with immobilised cells which are entrapped in a gel or polymer. Preferably used are defined high-efficiency mixed cultures of nitrifiers (Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter etc.). To achieve a high rate of breakdown, oxygen and carbonate or CO2 must be metered into the reactor system. The use of cells entrapped in a polymer means that the reactor productivity can be increased by a factor of 10-20 compared with classical processes.
