In a gaming machine with a win pay-out, according to a random function determined by a random generator (8-10) a combination of m symbols, representing a win in at least one of a plurality of win classes, each with a predetermined win probability, can be played (drawn) from a predetermined stock of n symbols ("1", "2", "3" to "49") and from the symbol stock a number of m symbols can be set optionally as a play combination for the player, m being smaller than n and the higher win probabilities being predetermined multiples of the lowest win probabilities. To allow a player to play on a coin operated gaming machine which, despite the fact that chances of a win have actually changed, gives the player essentially the same play stimulus with apparently the same chance of a win as in the game familiar to him, from the number (m + 1), increased by 1 (a missing number ("blank")), of the symbols forming the play combination a number x (0-6) can be played automatically according to a random function, as a win class with a higher win probability than corresponds to a probability of 1 to "n over m" for the win class of lowest win probability, with the predetermined multiples for the higher win probabilities being taken into account.
