Cutting tool for fitting on the spindle of machines for the engraving of chains and the like, which tool consists of an assembly of several independently-rotating parts enabling the cutting element (24) to rotate about a horizontal axis and the cutting device (4) to rotate about a vertical axis. The cutting device (4) can also move longitudinally under the action of a contact element (21) in contact with a cam (15) on a cylinder. By means of the present embodiment it is possible with a single machining station to obtain a plurality of movements of rotation and translation whereby a wide variety of different ornamental decorations can be created on, for example, continuously-machined chains or the like.
