Granular solid material is circulated through at least two separate but interconnected stages for the thermal and possibly physical and/or chemical treatment of gases. While descending under gravity in a first tower the solids receive heat directly from counter-flowing gas rising in the tower. In a following tower the heated solids transfer their acquired heat directly to a second counterflowing gas stream, before discharge for regeneration if necessary and return to the head of the first tower. Gas streams in the two towers may be different, or the same gas may undergo intermediate treatment. Solids flow rates in the two towers are mathematically related to the amts. of flowing gases and to the specific heats of solids and gases. USE - Esp. for treating soiled and/or corrosive gases.
