Continuous treatment of radioactive sludge - by crushing and heating to form dry granules with separate treatment of condensate and gases

Treatment of sludge, partic. mildly radioactive sludge, for storage by crushing and heating to form dry granules. Crushing and desiccation operations are simultaneous and continuous. Sludge is compressed by rotating screws in a tubular heated chamber. Gaseous effluent is recovered and treated separately. Pref. tubular chamber is heated by induction. Heating temp. increases along length of chamber. Gaseous effluents are cooled and condensed, separated as condensate which is treated in liquid form, and gaseous fraction which is filtered. ADVANTAGE - Reduced volume leading to reduced cost. Separate treatment of water and gases.
