Internal combustion engine with charge stratifying and applied ignition for operation with liquid fuels, in which, above the working chamber, an inlet valve, an exhaust valve, a prechamber with spark plug and a transfer port is provided, which connects the prechamber to the working chamber. The prechamber and the transfer port comprise a depression in the underside of the cylinder head, and the inlet valve is arranged on the base of the prechamber. In one partial area, the prechamber is separated from the working chamber by a transverse wall. The exhaust valve is arranged outside the depression in the underside of the cylinder head and the prechamber has a cooled wall for the film-like deposit of fuel. The compression ratio is in the range between 1:11 and 1:17. The transfer port has a course essentially following the curvature of the wall of the working chamber and a depth which decreases with increasing distance from the inlet valve. The inlet valve disc can be brought to within a narrow distance from the transverse wall, for temporary enlargement of the prechamber during the intake stroke.
