A process is described for separating solids contained in a liquid, in particular solids contained in waste waters, using a curved or inclined screen, by means of which a preseparation of liquid and solids is carried out. In order to achieve as sharp as possible a separation of the solids from the liquid and as a result to be able to thicken the solids contained in the liquid as much as possible, after and/or during the preliminary separation, an additional force acts on the solids and the residual liquid contained therein.
