The magazine for receiving and compacting foodstuffs is composed of a chamber (1), to which a filling gap (4) is connected. The chamber (1) is equipped with a pivotable side wall (6), to which there is rigidly fastened a sealing piece (7). When the pivotable side wall (6) is transferred from an inclined initial position to a vertical final position after the chamber (1) has been filled, the sealing piece (7) is forced to adopt the closing position. In this sequence of movement, the material inserted into the chamber (1) experiences intense compaction in both a vertical and a horizontal direction, perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the chamber (1).
