In the case of the method for extracting heat from an aqueous base medium by means of expansion of the latter, expansion is carried out in steps in a number of expansion steps which are arranged one behind the other with respect to the medium flow. The vapour extracted in each expansion step is drawn off from the step and the individual quantities of vapour are subjected in each case to thermal utilisation and/or enhancement measures parallel to one another. In one embodiment, the base medium takes the form of water fed through a boiler, which water is circulated via a heat pick-up point and through the expansion steps. The vapour extracted is subjected to thermal compression and is fed to a common vapour rail. The heat pick-up point and the heat exchangers (35, 36 and 37) are heated by a waste-heat source (39).
