The present invention relates to a method for analysing by pseudo-concentric layers a surface delimited by a non-parametric curve with reference to a surface sub-divided into separate unit areas. The surface to be analysed is superposed with the surface sub-divided into separate areas and a diagonal chain 3 is drawn along the contour line 2, this chain consisting of a minimum number of separate unit areas joined by two sides or two vertices, and a lateral chain 10 consisting of unit areas joined in pairs exclusively by sides is attached to this diagonal chain, the two said chains, or a defined number of such joined pairs, constituting a pseudo-concentric surface of constant width, and the analysis of the surface is continued by successively creating towards its centre such pseudo-concentric surfaces. Application to the analysis on a table to be digitised associated with a computer, of a surface such as a section through a cell, and to measuring the perimeter of such a surface. IMAGE
