PURPOSE:To obtain the title SiC whisker-reinforced Sialon composite sintered body material having excellent toughness and reliability by specifying the composition of the material contg. SiC whiskers and consisting essentially of alpha-Sialon and beta-Sialon. CONSTITUTION:The composite sintered body contains 5-45wt.%, or preferably 10-30wt.%, SiC whiskers and consists essentially of alpha-Sialon and beta-Sialon, and the weight ratio of the beta-Sialon to beta-Sialon is controlled to 1/1.2-1/20, or preferably to 1/2-1/9. The sintered body can be sintered at atmospheric pressure and at gas pressure. The composition formula of the alpha-Sialon is denoted by MX(Si, Al)12(O, N)16 (where M is = 1 kind among Li, Ca, Mg, Y, and rare- earth elements, and 0X=2). The composition formula of the beta-Sialon is denoted by Si6-ZAlZOZN8-Z (where 0Z=4.3). An SiC whisker-reinforced Sialon composite material useful for a high-speed cutting tool material and a member having resistance to wear, corrosion, and heat can be obtained from the sintered body.
