PURPOSE:To improve sequestering capacity and sedimentation effect of a high molecular sequestering agent by introducing a dithiocarbamic acid group obtd. by the reaction of CS2 with a polymer having a primary amino group into the sequestering agent. CONSTITUTION:A polymer contg. 5-100mol.% constituting unit expressed by the formula I as a constituent of the polymer is obtd. by using a polyacrylamide or a copolymer of acrylamide with an alpha,beta-unsatd. monomer, as raw material and carrying out Hofmann rearrangement reaction, etc. Then, an alkali metal salt of dithiocarbamate of the polymer is formed by allowing CS2 to react with the polymer in the presence of an alkali. A high molecular heavy metal sequestering agent having satisfactory heavy metal sequestering capacity, sedimentation effect, inexpensive cost of product and inexpensive running cost, and secondary pollution preventing effect simultaneously, is obtd. by utilizing the alkali metal salt of the dithiocarbamate of the polymer as an effective component of the sequestering agent.
