PRODUCTION OF 1,2-DIARYLETHYLENE

PURPOSE:To efficiently and readily produce the titled compound such as intermediate for alpha-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionic acid which is a medicine in one stage process, by reacting a salt of diaryliodonium with ethylene in the presence of a transition metal catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A symmetrical diaryliodonium salt expressed by formula I (X- is pair ion inactive to reaction, especially preferably halogen; R is H, alkyl, halogen, nitro or alkoxy) is reacted with ethylene in the presence of a transition metal catalyst (especially preferably palladium catalyst) in an inert solvent containing a base at a reaction temperature from ordinary temperature to 100 deg.C to provide 1,2-diarylethylene expressed by formula II. The compound expressed by formula II has antimicrobial activity and is used as estrogenhormone, optical whitening agent or starting raw material for substituted styrene.
