PURPOSE:To economically recover the title compound, by carrying out adsorption on active carbon in waste water in obtaining a phenolic compound methylated at the o-position from phenol, o-cresol and methanol and desorbing adsorbed substances with methanol. CONSTITUTION:Phenol or/and o-cresol and methanol are subjected to vaporphase catalytic reaction in the presence of a metallic oxide to provide a phenolic compound methylated at the o-position. In the process, a phenol-containing waste water discharged from the above-mentioned production process is subjected to adsorption on active carbon and adsorbed substances are then desorbed with methanol to recover the phenol or/and phenolic compound methylated at the o-position. The active carbon used has a regeneration ratio remarkably improved to 90% without deteriorating adsorption performance even by repeated use and can be continuously used for a long period.
